PSP Users And PNG files
If the png files open without a transparent background go to File -> Preferences -> File Format Preferences and select the PNG tab. Tick the box for Load and save transparency from / to alpha channel. If this is already checked and the backgrounds are still not transparent, uncheck this option instead. Your PNG files should now open with a transparent background.

Please note: In PSP 7 please go to Masks -> Load From Alpha Channel to get the transparent background.
